Mulyadi Tanjung

Dr. Mulyadi Tanjung, Drs., MS., is one of chemistry lecturers in Faculty of Science and Technology (FST). Born in Padangsidempuan, April 22, 1965, Mulyadi began to explore chemical science when entering college. He studied at Universitas Andalas to earn his bachelor degree. Then, he took his next studies, Master and Doctorate at Institut Teknologi Bandung. As a lecturer in Universitas Airlangga, he teaches a number of courses in the Department of Chemistry. Among others are Natural Products Chemistry, Practical Organic Chemistry I, Organic Chemistry II, Structure Determination of Organic Molecules, Organic Chemistry I, Practical Basic Chemistry I, Practical Organic Chemistry II, and Physical Organic Chemistry. The man who once joined the American Marketing Association has several works in form of books. Inevitably, the writing is closely related to his expertise in chemistry. Some of the titles are “Penentuan Struktur Molekul Organik Cetak” (2004), “Kimia Organik Fisik Cetak” (2004), “Metode Fitokimia Cetak” (2005), and “Metode Fitokimia Cetak” (2007). He believes in a philosophy, from his Minang origin, saying “Alam Takambang jadi guru” meaning that nature should be our teacher, so we should learn from nature.

This is similar to what he does in all his laboratory researches. Embracing and making friends with nature is important for him. In addition, medicines, mostly those useful for humans come from nature, too. Many chemical compounds can be found naturally in every corner of our nature. Such compounds are valuable for both humans and nature. In the case of agriculture, for example, pesticides are chemical compounds intended to produce a healthy plant. In case of health aspects of pharmaceuticals, chemical compounds also exist and contribute substantially. They can also be used for self-defense and survival from extinction. In Indonesia, we can find forests stretched across the country. They are “chemical plant” ready to be operated. Natural chemicals within the Earth deserve serious exploration in order to achieve maximum optimization. He hopes in the future, the world center of chemistry would refer to Indonesia which provides large amount of “chemical plant” available from Sabang to Merauke, the farthest east city in Indonesia to the west one. Hence, all related parties must be attentive and committed to restore the benefits offered by taking positive roles in preserving the environment and civilization. (*)
