Suryani Dyah Astuti

Dr. Suryani Dyah Astuti, S.Si., M.Si is an expert in photodynamic. This is a science of an alternative method to kill cancer cells, bacteria, viruses, and other harmful cells. Her focus area is APDT (Antibacterial Photodynamic Therapy) using light-based tool for the therapy. The system works using laser light and Light Emitting Diode (LED) combined with a photosensitizer (aberration of light). This process will produce a radical serving to kill bacteria. Suryani uses natural photosensitizer such as bacteria-based photosynthetic photosensitizer: Suji leaves, Moringa leaves, and chlorophyll alpha. Moreover, she has developed their prototypes. Thus, both students and practitioners will find it very useful for their research and therapy respectively. In addition to killing cancer cells, bacteria, and viruses, photodynamic therapy can also be applied in medical rehabilitation. Currently, she is developing products for cosmetics and anti-acne care using light. Research in photodynamic therapy has promising prospects as appreciated by many parties.

In addition to getting a grant for product mandates, she gets CPBT (Technology-Based Prospective Entrepreneurs) of Higher Education. This allows her to sell her product developed from her dissertation freely at an affordable price. As an analogy for price comparison, imported medical devices typically cost up to tens of millions rupiah, whereas her products cost cheaper only about four millions, still with guaranteed quality. Besides photodynamic, this Chair of Master Program in Technobiomedics also develops medical physics with radiation physics training. She hopes her students, after provided with fundamental basic trainings, will be able to be employed in hospitals. The latest one she is developing is medical devices based on ultrasonic waves to help the blind. Currently, she also continues to develop Technobiomedics program by intensively building synergies with many parties. It can be assured that this program open itself to interdisciplinary thinking to optimize applied science, as many revolutionary discoveries begin from such collaborations. In the meantime, Suryani always coordinates with all elements in the Master Program in Universitas Airlangga. This is done with the hope that progress made together could be more comprehensive in terms of mutual reinforcement among study programs. (*)
