It is such a challenge for Rachmah Ida to choose to pursue a certain field that not many people recognize. Five years after completing her studies in Communication Science at Universitas Airlangga in 1992, she continued to learn Media Studies at Edith Cowan University, Australia and earned her master degree. Many of her colleagues doubted her decision because this field has not attracted many interests for people to study. Her frequent readings on multiple perspectives arouse her interest in media studies. After returning to Indonesia with a Master of Media Studies, she began to write a lot about media and gender studies, some of which were published in scientific journals. In 2002, she continued her study in a doctoral program at Curtin University of Technology, Australia. By earning the title of Professor of Media Studies, she proves to people around her that she has made the right decision. In addition to becoming a lecturer in the Department of Communications at FISIP, she even becomes the only professor in Indonesia in the field. Her achievements continue to grow. In 2003, she received Researcher Fund from Asian Moslem Action Network (AMAN) for her progress as a potential young researcher. It was when she conducted a study entitled Images of Contemporary Urban Moslem Women in Indonesian (Islamic-themed) Television Drama in Transitional Indonesia.
This research reviewed the picture of Moslem women in a number of soap operas in Indonesia. With regard to her study on this, a book entitled Imaging Muslim Women in Indonesian Ramadan Soap Opera was also published. Born in Surabaya 47 years ago, she is often invited to be a speaker at many national and international conferences. She has a lot of experience in the arena for inter-state, for example, at the Workshop on Inter – Area, Media and Cultural Studies in Southeast Asia, Australian National University, Canberra (2010). It was where she presented her paper about Transformation of Communication & Media Studies in Indonesia. Later in 2015, she attended IAMCR Conference, UQAM Montreal, Canada to discuss Representations of Muslim Women in Muslim Women’s Magazines in Indonesia. She has also published many books including Komunikasi Politik, Media dan Demokrasi, 2nd Edition (2015), Metode Penelitian Studi-Studi Media dan Budaya, (2014), and Watching Indonesian Sinetron: Imagining Community around Television, (2009) and several others.
