Mochammad Amin Alamsjah

Most of Indonesia is made up of water. Supported by biodiversity, Indonesia waters are rich of natural sources. When used effectively, the natural resources could support Indonesian economy and social welfare. In addition to the reason of the richness of marine biodiversity, Mochammad Amin Alamsjahs grandparent owned ponds. Both inspired Amin to study the field of aquaculture and marine biology. His hard work and interest in the discipline have made the professor of Aquaculture of Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Science of Universitas Airlangga produce many studies in the area. He has done the studies since he was in graduate program. Amin has written 42 articles published in both national accredited journals and international journals. One of his studies most memorable to him was when he succeeded in discovering proteins from snake venom to cure Alzheimer disease. He did the research in Sugashima marine biology laboratory, University of Nagoya, Japan, together with his supervisor. His thesis advisor even appreciated and asked Amin to give a name for the snake venom protein. For his dissertation, Amin examined the phenomenon of red tide occurring in Japan waters. The phenomenon occurs when sea water undergoes color change due to the explosion of phytoplankton population. Through this research, Amin found the active ingredient of seaweed species that can suppress the growth of phytoplankton. From the results of the study, Amin was awarded the best graduate of doctoral studies at the Nagasaki University, Japan. Indonesian waters have about more than 550 species of seaweed, but only two species are actually utilized. In order that Indonesia is able to achieve food security, Amin has a number of ideas to accelerate marine biotechnology sector in seaweed production. The steps that the government can perform include transferring technology, learning management systems and production technology from leading industries in other countries, producing entrepreneurs, identifying and promoting potential companies producing processed seaweeds in the country, and calculating and analyzing strategic programs.
