Kuntoro is a professor at the Faculty of Public Health, Universitas Airlangga who has the expertise in biostatistics. He specializes in statistical modeling of public health. This modeling is used to measure the probabilities in the implementation of a health system based on statistics. With modeling, complex health problems are easily understood in a simple and structured way. Modeling helps to find the solution to a problem quickly. Kuntoro explained that statistical modeling is required in various fields. In the field of population, for example, modeling can be used to understand the birth and mortality rates of a population. Statistical modeling can also be used to measure the success of a family planning program (KB). Every program that will be implemented requires measurements, especially in the health sector program. This program is like an experiment that should be taken into account. Like when building an airplane, there should be a prototype that needs to be tested to know whether it works well. For Kuntoro, biostatistics can be an entry point for studying other disciplines because in statistical modeling, in addition to learning about health, one also studies mathematics, biology, and social sciences. Additionally, biostatistics is a basic science that determines a system. Statistical science is very important in everyday life because statistics is used as a reference for policy makers to make decisions. Kuntoro, who is also a demographer, completed his undergraduate study at the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Airlangga. He then took masters and doctoral programs in biostatistics at the University of Pittsburgh, United States. He also studied about medical statistics at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Kuntoro is also active in several associations related to his expertise such as the American Statistical Association (ASA), the International Biometric Society (IBS), and the International Union for the Scientific Study of Population (IUSSP).
