Kacung Marijan

Kacung Marijan is one of the Professor of Comparative Politics in the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences. Kacung started to like and observe some political phenomena in Indonesia during his senior high school years. Because of his interest in political science, he enrolled in undergraduate program in Universitas Airlangga to steep in political science. He preferred to learn about political Islam. He has produced many writings on the dynamics of politics and Islamic parties. One of the books he wrote during those years was “Abdurrahman Wahid: Mengurai Hubungan Agama dan Negara. He was entitled as the best graduates of the Faculty of Social and Political Science in 1988. After completing his undergraduate study, he became a lecturer in the Department of Political Science of his alma mater. In 1998, he continued his study to earn his master degree from Flinders University, Australia, in Political Science followed by taking doctoral program at the Australian National University (ANU) in 2005. He is also a quite well-known figure because he is active in expressing his thoughts in some media. He is often asked to be a columnist in several national printed media to review social, political, and cultural issues. Since 1986, he has written more than 300 articles in newspapers and magazines.

In addition to writing articles in the media, he is an education activist. This encourages him to write articles in some scientific journals and books. He administers the courses of Theory of Comparative Politics besides being frequently invited as speaker in several seminars. His involvement in politics is not only in writing, but also in real action: he founded the Research Center for Democracy and Human Rights Studies (PUSDEHAM) Surabaya in 1999. He is active both in academic field and in the realm of culture. This 52-year-old man was once the Director for Culture – Ministry of Education and Culture from 2012 to 2015. He also frequently led some cultural sessions in UNESCO assemblies back then. He is a renowned figure as he occupies some prominent positions such as members of the Academic Senate at Universitas Airlangga, the Coordinator of Student Partnership of the Developing Countries Program, the Chair of the Advisory Board of Social and Political Science, and the Chair of the Master Program in Social Sciences.
