Bambang Irawan is a Professor of Biology and Carsinology at Faculty of Science and Technology (FST), Universitas Airlangga. Born in Purwodadi Grobogan, Central Java on April 5, 1955, Bambang began studying biology in 1981 as a student of undergraduate program in the Department of Biology, Universitas Gadjah Mada. During his last period in studying, he did a research on bird communities in Progo estuary, Yogyakarta. In 1991, he continued to study in University of Ehime for his Master degree. His thesis was about the interaction between two types of crabs and the correlation with their tolerance to salinity and drought. He took his doctorate in 1994, at Tohoku University with his dissertation topic related to the mechanism of speciation in estuarine crabs. In 2013, he was officially inaugurated as a professor at his faculty. It was such a journey along with various experience and dedications. In 1982, he became an assistant of associate expert at the Faculty of Medicine.
Four years later, he was appointed as an expert assistant at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, now is known as the Faculty of Science and Technology. He has been teaching some courses at the Department of Biology during his year of being a lecturer, such as General Biology, Molecular Genetics, Biosystematics, Carcinology, Abiotic Environments, Population Biology, Ecological Data Analysis, and many more. Professor Bambang who joins Indonesian Biological Society also has several works written in books associated with his expertise in biology. Among others are Lingkungan Abiotik jilid: Atmosfer, Hidrosfer, Litosfer (2015); Karsinologi dengan Penjelasan Deskriptif dan Fungsional (2013); Genetika; Penjelasan Mekanisme Pewarisan Sifat (2010); Teori dan Praktik Ekologi (2008); Genetika Molekuler (2008) and others. Meanwhile, in terms of research, he has his own research area: the identification of crab, shrimp, and geckos. Carcinology is the study of all aspects related to animal members of crustacean subphylum. Based on his experience during his research, he believes that there are many members of crustacean which movements are different from each other. Additionally, there are many other interesting aspects to examine. (*)
