Achmad Syahrani

Prof. Dr. H. Achmad Syahrani, Apt., MS. is one of experts in Biosynthesis and Organic Chemistry in Universitas Airlangga. His expertise in biotechnology is undeniable. Syahrani was appointed as Professor in Pharmacy Universitas Airlangga in 2003. Back then, he was the youngest Professor in the age of 49 in this university. There are five kinds of medicine generations in Indonesia: traditional medicine or jamu, synthetic medicine, antibiotic medicine, proteomic genomic and stem cell as the latest one. Syahrani is one of experts in synthetic medicine in UNAIR. Development of synthetic medicine started from traditional medication which no longer satisfied human needs. Then, the development in Chemistry occurred, which causing invention of artificial drug materials called synthesis. Then, synthetic medicine was massively manufactured. Of plant biosynthesis process, Syahrani took plant cell grown in cell culture, then changed it into chemical compound. This, plant could produce primary and secondary metabolites in form of carbohydrate, fat, and protein. The prospect of Syahranis research area is promising because many plants in Indonesia have structures for difficult medicine materials. Let alone, Indonesia is a country with the richest biodiversity in the world. Hence, many plants have not been studied by researchers.

Besides research, the man, who was 1st Vice Rector of Universitas Airlangga in 2010-2015, also actives in writing international publications. From his doctoral dissertation which then published in international journal, Syahrani achieved H-Index 5 in Scopus assessment. Furthermore, Syahrani achieved numerous awards for his research and publications, such as: URGE Award for International Publication from Ministry of National Education in 1999. In the same year, he, who was a member of Pharmacist Profession Certification Board, obtained Piagam Nominator Peneliti Terbaik Hibah Bersaing from the General Directorate DIKTI Depdiknas. Syahrani also played significant role in UNAIR transformation into PT BHMN in 2005-2006 through I-MHERE Project which was a competitive program from World Bank to change and develop UNAIR. At that time, he was the Executive Director of I-MHERE Project. (*)
